The sheath. First it was First Lady Michelle Obama who came along and rocked the classic look so effortlessly. Then the HRH Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton came on the scene and did the same. Now, thanks to both these luminous icons, this timeless yet modern style is enjoying a well-deserved time in the spotlight.
Form-fitting, and hitting anywhere from just above, to just below the knee -- this slim style is popular for a reason. The look is versatile, polished and travel-ready. Plus, it's perfectly work-appropriate.
Here are a few tips to help you pull it all off just as glamorously as FLOTUS and the Duchess.
• Look for solid colors. Tiny prints work well, too. Plaid, houndstooth and narrow chevron stripes in weightier fabrics can work in the wintertime.
• Choose a neckline that flatters your figure. Large-breasted women should avoid a high neck or boatneck and should instead opt for a neckline that minimizes the bust, such as a v-neck or deep scoop.
• If you have a belly, a gathered or ruched middle will provide a little camouflage.
• Bottom-heavy ladies should opt for a dress with a slightly wider, A-line skirt. Conversely, if you have narrow hips, choose a dress with a bottom that's more tapered.
• Opt for a side-zip if you can. The dress will grace your waistline better than a dress with a back zipper.
• Make sure there is a back or side slit so you can walk easily.
Options abound when it comes to shoes that work with this style. Depending on the occasion, flats, ankle boots or pumps will fit the bill. Keep in mind that a high-heeled pump in a nude-ish shade will do wonders to elongate your leg.
