Men’s Style Expert: Suiting Up

Fall fashion centers around tailoring and suiting...

Posted September 6, 2012

The end of summer is synonymous with a closet revamp. And, this fall, our experts say is “all about the suit.” Stylist Stacy Zimmerman, who works with clients as diverse as Nordstrom, Amazon and Mircrosoft, says, “No matter the fashion show, it was clear one should have a great suit and a great tailor on hand. Think very British. We are also seeing a mix of prints and textures for men this season within the suits.”

Other men’s styles include texturized sweaters and overcoats as well as turtlenecks. “The turtleneck stepped back into focus this season and made appearances on quite a few runways,” says Zimmerman. “You will also see a pop of color in royal blue, brick and burgundy throughout.” She points to greats such as Burberry, Billy Reid, Gucci and Prada as inspiration.

“If you are going to splurge on anything,” says Zimmerman, “the first place to start would be with the key item, the suit. That is my recommendation. Or take a suit you already own and have it tailored. Try popping in some sweaters in the new colors for fall, or mix something you normally wouldn’t think to try.”

The main thing to keep in mind is that, as our expert states, “Drop crotch pants and ill fitting suits are out.” It’s about tailoring and structure this fall. It’s the easiest way to make sure your closet is up to date.
