Hair Expert How To: Do The Wave

Loose waves make sexy, carefree hair...

Posted September 6, 2012

After a couple seasons of stick straight hair, things are loosening up a bit. Short or long, this season it’s “effortless, beachy hair, like a Victoria’s Secret model, very sexy and unkempt,” says celebrity hairstylist, Sherri Belanger. She names Vanessa Hudgens, Kate Hudson and Miley Cyrus as examples.

To create loose, sexy waves, Belanger says you’ll need a one inch curling iron, or one and a quarter inch for longer hair. “Wrap your hair around the iron, let it sit for about five seconds,” she says, “then remove the hair off the iron but don’t let it go. Pull it straight, instead, to soften the curl.”

If hair feels almost too curly, Belanger says you can actually run a flat iron through the ends to smooth it out. “But,” she warns, “make sure the iron is low temperature so you don’t make the ends too straight.”

Another way, especially good for long hair, is creating two loosely braided pigtails and letting them sit for a bit. “When you remove the braids,” says Belanger, “shake out your hair and add just a few soft curls with the iron. This gives a really neat texture to your hair.”

Belanger has even created an easy-to-follow video demonstrating the style.

Trouble keeping this feminine style fresh all day? “It’s important to use a lightweight hairspray before and after you curl,” Belanger advises. “As long as it doesn’t make your hair stiff, it’s your friend when it comes to creating loose waves.”
