Who says trends are only confined to the fashion world? Interior design experts are busy forecasting the year to come, and we’ve asked a few for a sneak peek into what’ll be hot for the home in 2012.
Shades of Vibrance: According to PPG Pittsburgh Paints, understated colors have no place in 2012, when strong, bright hues will be vividly in vogue. “Homeowners will take the leap into deep vivid hues this year,” says brand manager Dee Schlotter. “On a quest for intensity, they’ll inject their décor with deep indigos like Blue Tang, saturated reds like Rum Punch, big purples like Grape Juice, and almost neon-yellows like Citrus Spice.”
Eye-Catching Accent Pieces: Metallics, feathers, rustic wood, and typography, oh my! These are just a few of the hot trends percolating in the interior design world, according to Kelly & Olive co-founder Courtney Davis. Davis suggests utilizing neutral tones like grey, black, white, and tan as a “baseline” for major décor and then incorporating these trendier types of items as accent pieces. “It’s like in fashion—the most chic women are often wearing the simplest clothes, with one or two bold or surprising statements,” she explains.
Big on Belgian: According to Posh Living’s Kerry Ann Dame, Belgian Linen (aka natural unbleached linen in its original flax color) is “the new beige.” Dame says that the popularity of the fabric stems from its ability to complement many different types of décor styles, from French Shabby Chic to English Country to Modern. “It’s a clean, fresh look for upholstery and can really make the shape of the frame stand out on a curvy antique,” says Dame. “It’s beautiful to sit on, looks fantastic crisp or wrinkled, is sturdy, and goes with everything.”
