Gift Guide: College Graduate

What to get the newly grown up…

Posted May 20, 2015

Congrats, you’ve got a college graduate in the family! Now what? While he/she has been trying to figure out his/her future, you’ve been trying to figure out what would make for a great graduation gift. Whether you are a parent, relative, or family friend, read on for ideas on what to get someone with the world at their fingertips.

Mom

Your kid is all grown up so the mini fridge, compact microwave, and twin sheets that called her college dorm home won’t cut it in the real world. If your grad is moving into her own apartment—here’s hoping—buy her home furnishings. In other words, things she needs rather than wants, such as a cookware set, elegant dresser, or even a heavy-duty vacuum cleaner. She’ll thank you for it later.

Dad

Dads are often the “cool” parents, so impress your college grad with a cool tech gift. Smartphones boast endless accessories, from selfie sticks to custom cases. Pass over a ho-hum charger for a fisheye lens or Bluetooth speakers. If you’re the sentimental type, a watch is both a high-tech and old school gift. And it’s symbolic to boot.

Grandparents

Men’s fashion may not look like it did in the 1940s, but one thing never goes out of style: a classic briefcase. Resist the urge to recycle your own, and instead splurge on a leather messenger with compartments for a laptop, cell phone and other tech gadgets the kids are using these days.

Sibling

Whether you’re a big brother on an entry-level salary or a little sister still saving up allowance money, there’s an affordable gift for your graduating sibling out there, trust us. A colorful leather or linen notebook is both chic and practical for jotting down job leads, apartment listings, etc.

Friend

Being a family friend, rather than a relative, provides a bit of outsider perspective. Eschew overly affectionate gifts for something related to the graduate’s future career. Think: a photography tome for the art-school student or a money clip for a future financial mover and shaker.

No matter how you know the graduate, a congratulatory gesture marks the momentous occasion.
