There’s more to holiday decorating than ornamenting the Christmas tree and hanging the stockings “by the chimney with care.” If you are home for the holidays this year, then transform your abode into a winter wonderland with a snowy palette and magical trimmings. Here’s how to deck your halls.
Warm Lighting
When the weather outside is frightful, it needs to be warm and cozy indoors. We’re not all so lucky as to have a fireplace, but candles are the next best thing. Pepper each room with tea lights at different heights. String fairy lights around curtain rods and over doorframes. And turn the dimmer down on your main lights so the candles cast a warm glow.
Wintry Colors
While fall was all about shades of orange and aubergine, winter evokes whites and silvers. Drape a chunky white throw over your sofa to inspire snuggling. Limit your Christmas tree ornaments to pearlescent glass globes, gleaming, silvery tinsel, and cotton ball garlands. Set the table with a cream tablecloth, tie ribbons to stemware, create a simple centerpiece with a glass jar full of peppermint balls, and hang extra ornaments from a chandelier above. Finally, dangle silver bells on doorknobs so they jingle throughout the day.
Festive Frills
The holidays are a celebratory time, especially for kids. Bring your home to life this season with entertaining accouterments like a train set that your kids can assemble themselves. Place a bowl of dreidels on your coffee table to entice a game. Place shiny, wrapped presents under the tree (even if they stay empty for a short time). And bring the outdoors in by overlaying doorways with pine tree branches that will fill your home with a woodsy aroma.
There’s no need to hire a faux snow machine to experience a storybook winter at home. These festive décor changes are sure to get any Scrooge in the spirit.
