There was one message on the fall runways: oversized. And we don’t just mean your pumpkin spice latte or that choc chip muffin for afternoon tea. Brands such as Celiné, Comme des Garçon, and Alexander Wang all favored a larger silhouette for their outerwear, and sent models down the runway in extra-large, jewel-toned coats. They also upped the ante on footwear, extending boot lengths up and over the knee.
While this exaggerated silhouette may seem a little frightening, it’s quite easy to pull off. The trick? Don’t be scared. Layering is key during the colder months, and these oversized coats and jackets make piling on shirts, sweaters, a blazer, and a coat that much easier. Rather than buying your regular style in a larger size, look for coats that have a masculine, boxy silhouette. Also, opt for a colorful outer shell, rather than a traditional black or gray. Vivid colors were another trend on the fall runways, and are certain to brighten up any gloomy winter day.
When it comes to footwear, supersize the length of your boot. Over-the-knee styles are best, and actually help to lengthen the leg. For the most flattering silhouette, pair a larger coat with skinny leggings or pants, and your over-the-knee boots with midi-skirts or jeans.
