People can get kind of crazy about their pets. Blinged-out purses for Pomeranians, police outfits with pink bows for bulldogs, rhinestone collars for Siamese kittens. But pets don’t care about all those accessories. Really want to make them happy? Simple: show them love and keep them comfortable.
Ki Park, owner of KoolDog, a company that makes doghouses with slick, modern designs, says, “Just like we desire a good place to work, be entertained and rest, our pets also deserve a place of their own where they can be feel secure and comfortable.”
High perches are the way to go for cats, as their natural inclination is to survey their surroundings. Everyone knows dogs are pack animals by nature, but they’re also den animals. “You may have noticed that your dog likes to lie beneath your dining room table or other confined spaces,” says Park, “a dog house isn’t all that different. Both resemble a den.”
Pet huts and houses should be just large enough for your pet to enter, turn around and lay down comfortably, as moderately tight spaces provide a sense of security. And speaking of security, it’s a good idea to get a gate. It relegates them to areas you deem safe and appropriate, and helps preserve your own sanity knowing they can no longer rummage through the trash or get into the fridge.
Park says, “Other necessary things to maximize their well-being includes toys, a comfy and clean bed, and plenty of exercise.” But more than anything, urges Park, it’s your love and affection they’ll appreciate the most.
