For me, as an avid reader, the smell and feel of a new paper book evokes the thrill of a reading adventure to come. So I was reluctant to enter the e-book trend out of a sense of nostalgia and loyalty to the printed word.
But everywhere I looked I saw people pulling slender e-books out of their purse, briefcase or pocket, conveniently tacking on a bit of extra reading time to their day. Coveting that extra time (and convenience) I decided to try out an e-reader. My choice? THE NEW NOOK.
And I’m not alone in making the switch.
According to a recent Pew Research Center study, one-fifth of American adults (21%) report that they have read an e-book in the past year. This number continues to increase as evidenced by a spike in the ownership of both tablet computers and e-book reading devices.
So how do I like my Nook? I love it. Now, I carry not just one book with me at all times, I take several. Whatever my mood, I have some written content to match it. I also discovered that most of my magazine subscriptions now have downloadable versions, so I can take those with me, too.
One of the unexpected advantages is the privacy factor. No one has to know what I’m reading. Fifty Shades of Grey is now fifty shades of not-your-business. And with the recent FAA ruling allowing electronic devices to stay on throughout the flight, my last objection has been shot down.
Even for the most dedicated bibliophile, I recommend e-books. While I still love the feel of a physical book, I love the convenience of having words at my fingertips even more.
