New Year’s Style Resolutions

New year, new you…

Posted January 4, 2016

From vowing to go back to the gym to giving up junk food to saving up for that luxurious vacation, New Year’s Resolutions are a great way to outline your goals. But to be honest, these steadfast resolutions are often just second attempts at fulfilling last year's promises. Rather than make the same resolutions year after year, have some fun this time around and actually try something new for once. For 2016, resolve to refresh your wardrobe and try on some daring trends for size.

Retro Future

The 1970s are back, baby. Designers such as Diane von Furstenburg, BCBG Max Azria and Roberto Cavalli paid homage to the era in the fall 2015 shows, and the trend has no signs of slowing down in 2016. We love a head-to-toe retro look, but to avoid looking too overdone and outdated try wearing just one ’70s-inspired piece at a time: flared pants, felt hats, camel suede jackets, printed turtlenecks, or a pair of fringe ankle boots will give your ensemble a groovy vibe even when worn alone.

Lace Up

Peek-a-boo lace is the perfect way to subtly show a little skin. One of the prettiest, most feminine runway trends, it was favored by designers including Valentino and Nina Ricci. For 2016, maxi dresses with lace insets will look romantic anytime of year, lace collars will make any outfit appear classic and elegant, and lace blouses tucked into high-waisted trousers will always look incredibly chic.

Go Big or Go Home

Oversized clothes are not a novel trend, but designers are taking it to a whole new level in 2016 (think oversized sweaters, cardigans, dresses, and jackets). Alexander Wang, Givenchy, and Ralph Lauren all believe that bigger is better. Try pairing a voluminous cape with sleek over-the-knee boots, or a styling a chunky sweater with a slim-fitting pencil skirt to create balance.

Most New Year’s Resolutions are works in progress, but achieve your goal early this year by slipping into some new clothes and starting off the year in style.
