How to Organize Your Jewelry

Keep your bits ‘n baubles easy to reach and tangle free...

Whether you’re dealing with heirlooms or cheapies, how you store your jewelry makes a world of difference. If your pieces are kept in disarray it can be so frustrating to find specific items, but even worse, it can also cause damage like tarnishing or tangles. Here are some of out favorite tips to help you keep things in order, but look fabulous at the same time.

Start by taking inventory of what you have. Clear your bed or dining table and lay out all of your jewelry so you can see each piece. Organize your treasures by type and style. Separate the wear-everyday pieces from the special ones that definitely need to be stored away safely. Special items can go into a classic jewelry box or into drawers, while frequently worn pieces can be displayed on a vanity or dresser.

Long necklaces and earrings can be the most likely to get tangled, so it’s important they have space. Try using a corkboard on your wall and decorative tacks to hang them (earrings can just ease right in). A more creative idea is to mount an empty picture frame to the wall. You can either place hooks onto the wall inside the frame for the pieces to hang from, or place several rows of ribbon or heavy string across the frame (especially great for earrings).

Plastic trays are great for separating and storing various pieces. If you can empty the top drawer of a dresser or desk, you can place the trays inside so your baubles aren’t exposed to dust. The small items you wear often can sit in a tray on your dresser. Antique teacups are also an adorable solution, and silver trays look chic and polished.
