A Different Kind of Holiday Décor

Add your personal touch to holiday decorating…

Posted December 16, 2014

Decorate your house for the holidays with bold colors, bright lights and non-traditional ideas.

Wreaths

Everyone does the wreath. But most do it in the standard way—on the front door with evergreen branches, holly, and a big red ribbon. But you can also think of a wreath as a statement piece, one that can be hung up on your door or on your wall like a piece of art. We’ve seen wreaths that are a tangle of bleached white branches; wreaths painted a deep gold; wreaths made of herbs (oregano, rosemary, bay leaves), which can actually be used for cooking. In other words, take the traditional wreath and put your own personal spin on it!

Mantelpieces

All-white holiday décor is very elegant and minimalist. Acorns, pumpkins, candles, strings of lights - you name it - go all white. In fact, you can go in the other direction with color—solid red, for instance, or solid blue, can make a statement. A series of all-red wreaths, candles, and lights would give your mantle pizzazz. I also like the idea of all gold and silver displays (think mini-trees, stockings, and frames).

Centerpieces

Another route to take with holiday décor? Make it rustic. Natural wood gives you that cozy cabin feel, even if you live in a modernist masterpiece. Think twigs and twine inside large glass vases, repurposed wood serving platters, rust-colored lanterns in place of candles, and a floral display without flowers, just branches.

Lighting

I love multi-color Christmas lighting like no one else but it doesn’t have to be the only festive option. Take a string of white mini-lights, and put them behind a sheer curtain to give the room a warm glow. Grab a lit up sign that says “JOY,” and hang it on the wall (or on the mantel). Get a string of café lights (round bulbs with white lights) and string them across the ceiling in rows, as if your living room was actually a cool backyard garden. Take a cluster of blue and white lights and put them in a big glass jar for a festive lamp decoration. Voila! Your home is ready for any holiday celebration!
