Pick up any décor magazine or scroll your favorite design blog, and it’s clear that pop-worthy primary colors are the latest trend in wall paint. Even if just a single accent wall versus full-on four walls, going bold can definitely make a lasting design statement.
“Accent colors incorporate bold shades into a space without overdoing it,” says Cathy Hobbs, interior designer and former contestant on HGTV’s “Design Star.” “They not only add interest but can highlight particular features of a space and serve as the foundation for the color palette.”
So what hue is best for your home when going DIY? Get inspired with these tips from Hobbs:
Go green. “In many ways, green is the new neutral,” says Hobbs. “Not only can green be paired with so many colors, but there are so many shades from which to choose.” Some of Hobbs’ current favorites include Jalapeno pepper green (which pairs well with pure white, eggplant, and citrus-y colors) and the color of fresh cut grass.
Bite into orange. Orange is Hobbs’ go-to signature color for design, as she finds it to be “lively, sophisticated, and trendy yet timeless.” She also lauds the shade’s ability to instantly brighten a room—and apparently Pantone agrees, as they’ve named Tangerine Tango the color for 2012.
Dip into turquoise waters. According to Hobbs, turquoise has gained favor in recent years among design professionals, as it works well in various living spaces. “I love using turquoise, especially in bathrooms as it reminds me of water,” says Hobbs. “Turquoise also works well in living rooms when paired with black, charcoal, or brown.”
Pick not-so-mellow yellow. Hobbs suggests incorporating various tints of yellow into your living space, not only on walls but also through other décor pieces like pillows and pottery. “The wonderful thing about yellow is that, like a great black dress, you can pair it with so many things!” says Hobbs.
And that is a beautiful thing.
