The days of men having only two pairs of shoes are long gone. Now, men are taking up more floor space in the closet than ever. “I am seeing everything from slip on espadrilles to various forms of the polished creeper shapes to the classic oxford along with tasseled loafers,” says our fashion expert, Gena Tuso. “Lots of 90s shapes are still popping up for fall with boots in a monkey boot shape, 3 hole boots and choices in every color and width. Nearly everything transfers from summer to fall.”
Unless you live in a warmer climate, slip ons and sandals cannot continue into fall. “Come fall, skip anything without laces or that is softer. But dressier shoes can be held on to as well as more durable sneakers with thicker soles,” says Tuso. “Oxfords with khakis can now move on to a wool trouser with a thicker sock. They can also be paired with heavier denim. Just the apparel and socks get heavier.”
Especially hot right now for summer are high tops and minimal or technical styles. Office shoes are sporting buckles or going completely classic but adding colorful or chunky soles.
Fortunately, there are fewer and fewer rules regarding men’s footwear. “Almost anything can go from work to play these days,” says Tuso. “It all depends on the outfit itself and how well it can be dressed down or minimized.”
