Home Improvements
(Nov 3, 2004)
Last week I had this epiphany that fashion looks better when it's coasting over the red carpet. Then I started wondering if I would look better coasting over the red carpet. So rather than try to get my name on all sorts of fab celeb party lists (how does a nobody like me do that, anyway?), I decided I would just bring the red carpet in.
So with permission from my parents, I set to doing some major home improvements. I sliced a perfectly straight four-foot-wide swath out of my turquoise bedroom carpet leading from my door to my mirrored closet. Then my mom and I headed to one of those big home stores. We got a cut-to-order path of crimson carpeting to fill the gap in my floor and then headed over to the mall for a couple of test-run oufits.
Since I was juiced to get home and lay the carpet (never thought I'd say that), we only spent an hour at the mall. But I got what I consider to be a few winter essentials. First I found a perfect pair of knee-high, round-toed suede boots. And not those trendy shearling jobs that are strictly last year. And what could go better with a pair of bootsies that cover up so much leg than a skirt that doesn't? Micro-minis are a bit much (or should I say too little) when the temp falls below 60, so I decided to pair those boots with a very respectable knee-length denim pleated skirt. I could just smell the sizzle.
I topped it off with a poofy, faux-fur lined hoodie parka. Added a few lights, some friends snapping pix (faux paparazzi), and a Josh Duhamel look-alike on my arm and – voila! Operation Gabby Rocks the Red Carpet was a total success.
