A New Start for Speech Team - Sep 15, 2004
(Sep 15, 2004) Try-outs for the speech team at my school are tomorrow, and I don’t know why, but I’m nervous. Since I’ve been on the team for the past 3 years, I’ll for sure make the team, but still, the pressure’s on. This is my first chance to make a good impression on my coaches. Also, I decided to try out for a new event this year (there’s 13 events in all). I know that I’ll be doing oratory, an original persuasive speech, but I’m trying out for prose tomorrow. I’ve always loved prose, which is reading short stories, because it’s fun to really try and be the different characters. Speech team has always been my favorite activity at school because you can let all your emotions out and because I’m so close to all my teammates.

Which brings up why I’m dreading tomorrow. One of my best friends decided to try out this year. In most cases I would absolutely love this, except I’m afraid that having her on the team would change everything. Although we love to have fun on the team, when we compete, we’re 100% serious. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my friend be serious. Another thing is that everyone on the team is practically like a family. As much as I love my friend, she tends to create drama and rifts between others. Part of me wants to discourage her from joining, but I think it’s more important to be a supportive friend. Who knows, maybe she’ll surprise me? Only time will tell.
